PV-T (PHOTOVOLTAIC THERMAL)

  
  A PV-T panel is a combined panel that operates simultaneously as a Photovoltaic panel and a solar thermal panel. These panels tend to be selected for low temperature projects in order to optimise the outputs. As the heat is drawn away from the panel, a higher electrical efficiency is maintained.

Technology Overview

PV-T is a niche product and should only be installed by companies who have had specific training in PV-T systems and are confident in their operation. If a system is installed and commissioned for optimum operation, a Mono PV-T collector can achieve around a 20% higher annual electrical output than the same capacity of Mono PV. This is usually observed in Hybrid systems where the low grade heat from the panels can be used all year round. One such system using the PowerVolt panels is the Solar house in Leicester. Here the PowerVolt panels are used to charge an Earth energy bank under the building. This earth energy bank acts as an inter-seasonal store for the heat, allowing the heat pump connected to the system to draw from this stored heat in the winter. This higher source temperature increases the efficiency of the heat pump whilst the lower operating temperature of the PV-T leads to an increase in electrical generation.

 The PowerVolt collector is designed to maximize electrical output of the panel, making it an enhanced PV collector capable of producing a reasonable amount of heat in the summer. PowerTherm 180W (elec) & 680W (therm)

  The PowerTherm collector is designed to maximize on the thermal output of the panel, making it an enhanced thermal collector capable of electrical production. The peak outputs of this panel are 180 electrical watts and 680 thermal watts. It will produce roughly 80% of the output of the equivalent area of flat plate solar thermal and it also produces electricity. This is an excellent solution if your project has restricted space while trying to maximize the energy return.

Solar Angel is a low carbon hybrid solar technology producing both electricity and hot water from one slimline, attractive panel. The peak outputs of this panel are 250 electrical watts and 648 thermal watts. When correctly installed, the collector can produce up to 20% more electricity than conventional Photovoltaics in the UK and provide a contribution to the thermal requirements of a building.
