  Solar thermal technology uses the sun’s energy to generate heat. This energy is used to heat water and can also power solar cooling systems. 
There are 3 main types of solar thermal collectors; Evacuated tube collectors, Glazed Flat plate collector and Unglazed collector
 The correct panel selection is important as each panel type works more efficiently at different temperature ranges. All of our panels are Solar keymarked and so are eligble for grants under the MCS equivilancy scheme.

Technology Overview

 How does solar thermal work? 

Infrared radiation from the sun penetrates the panel through the top glass plate and gets trapped inside. The temperature increases as more radiation is trapped and heats the tubes inside the panel. The tubes are filled with a liquid (containing anti-freeze in the UK) which travels around a circuit from the panels to the hot water cylinder. When the heated liquid reaches the cylinder, it transfers its heat to the water in the cylinder. The liquid then continues round the circuit, repeating the process, until the desired temperature of the water in the cylinder is achieved. At this point, the pump stops and will only start again once the temperature in the cylinder drops.
 
Most UK homes will only need a small system of between 3-6 square meters to supplement their domestic hot water systems.
 For commercial systems in general, the system should be sized to meet the demand on the peak solar day of the year. This prevents the system stagnating when there is more heat available than required. A correctly sized solar thermal system can have an attractive ROI for commercial customers but are often overlooked due to the installation and maintenance being more involved than with PV.

The Wunder ALS Horizontal is a flat plate solar thermal collector with a highly selective TinOx coated Aluminium absorber. The Horizontal layout means they can fit on some otherwise unusable roof areas. Also on flat roofs these panels are much less visible from the ground tan a vertical mounted panel. Advanced manufacturing techniques means that Solimpeks offer a 10-year warranty on the units​:
