Herne Bay Pier Trust: Solar Promenade

An innovative bifacial solar promenade that simultaneously generates clean energy and replaces the deteriorating pier walkway cover. Bifacial panels allow light transmittance for ambient shelter while boosting generation from both faces. A bespoke structural framework was designed to withstand coastal conditions while providing cover and shelter to pier visitors and commercial huts. SolarEdge inverter and power optimiser technology provides shading protection and panel-level monitoring in this uniquely challenging environment.

  • System capacity: 41 kW bifacial walkway / 27.6 kW AC output
  • Annual generation: 40,000 kWh/yr
  • Energy savings: £4,000/yr
  • CO₂ saved: 12,096 kg/yr
