Design methodology

Performance-modelled system design

Every system is sized using PVSol performance simulation, factoring in site location, roof orientation, pitch and shading, combined with location specific irradiance data. The same modelling rigour applies whether the project is a 50kWp rooftop retrofit or a multi-megawatt array.

Sites with high daytime demand typically see solar PV cover a substantial proportion of annual electricity consumption, with payback of 4-6 years depending on system size, tariff structure and load profile.

  • ✓ESG-conscious design: environmental, social and governance impact considered from the outset
  • ✓Free drone survey and design: accurate roof and site data captured without scaffolding or access equipment, to size your system correctly
  • ✓G99 design and application: we handle the DNO grid connection process for larger commercial systems
  • ✓Planning assistance: we advise on and support any planning permission requirements for your site
  • ✓Glint and glare reports: assessed where required, for sites near airports, roads or other sensitive receptors
  • ✓CDM management: full compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015
  • ✓Quality components: we only install panels from proven, tier-1 manufacturers
  • ✓Full sign off certification and handover, issued on completion
  • ✓Ongoing aftercare: support and remote monitoring for the operational life of the system

Technology agnostic by design

While we are not tied to any panel manufacturer, quality drives our product selection process. Every panel we specify is Bloomberg Tier 1 rated for proven quality and financial reliability, and fully labour traceable, so you can be confident there is no modern slavery risk in the manufacturing supply chain.

Every system is specified from the wider market of proven manufacturers to match your roof, budget and performance goals, not to move a particular product.

FAQs

Commercial solar PV: technical and commercial questions

What is the typical project timeline, from survey to switch-on?

Most commercial rooftop installations are completed within one to three weeks on site, depending on system size and roof access. Including design, structural checks and DNO (grid connection) approval, a typical project runs eight to twelve weeks from survey to switch-on. Works are scheduled to minimise disruption to your operations.

What are the planning requirements for a commercial rooftop system?

In most cases, none. Rooftop solar on commercial buildings usually falls under permitted development rights in England, provided the panels do not protrude more than 200mm and the building is not listed or in a conservation area. We confirm the planning position for your specific site as part of the free survey.

How is surplus generation handled?

Surplus generation is exported to the grid and paid for under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), or stored in a battery system for use later. Systems are designed around your consumption profile so the majority of generation is used on site, which is where the greatest financial benefit lies.

What ongoing operations and maintenance is required?

Solar PV has no moving parts, so requirements are minimal: an annual inspection and periodic panel cleaning depending on location, with remote monitoring flagging performance issues automatically. Panels typically carry 25-year performance warranties.

Which roof types and structures can accommodate solar PV?

We install on pitched metal, flat membrane, fibre cement and standing-seam roofs, plus ground-mounted arrays where roof space is limited. Every project starts with a structural assessment to confirm the roof or ground condition can carry the load, included in the survey.
