Solar for Schools and Public Sector: What We've Learned Delivering These Projects

Public sector solar projects (schools, councils, further and higher education) carry constraints that a standard commercial rooftop project doesn’t. A few patterns we’ve seen consistently across our education and local authority projects.
Budget cycles and business case scrutiny shape timelines more than the technical design does
Public sector capital spending typically runs against a financial year, with business cases needing to clear internal sign-off before works can start. Building enough lead time into a project schedule for this (rather than assuming a private-sector-style turnaround) avoids the single most common cause of delay we see on these projects.
Educational and community value adds to the case, not just the energy savings
At Grange Primary School, module-level monitoring via 104 SolarEdge power optimisers was specified partly so pupils and staff could engage with real-time generation data as a teaching resource, supporting the council’s wider climate action programme, alongside the direct £26,500 annual energy saving. That combination of hard financial return and visible sustainability/educational value is often what secures sign-off internally, not the payback figure alone.
Minimising disruption to term-time operations
School and campus projects need to work around term dates, exam periods and, for larger estates work like our University of Westminster project, summer closure windows, coordinated closely with site security and estates staff. Phased delivery plans that respect the institution’s calendar, not just the contractor’s, make these projects run smoothly.
Scale varies enormously, and the fundamentals still apply
Our education and public sector portfolio spans a 48.6kWp single primary school installation (Cauldwell Primary School) through to 4.1MW across a national research campus (Harwell, for STFC and UKRI), very different scales, but the same underlying discipline: accurate site-specific irradiance modelling, a structural survey before design, and early engagement with the DNO where system size warrants it.
